Judging a Cover by its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for ALL THE FEELS

Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!

Hello Swooners!

We are SO excited to present to you the cover directions for All the Feels! If you aren’t familiar with Danika Stone’s FANtastic story about one avid fangirl’s quest to bring her favorite movie character back from the dead (with a little help from her charismatic steampunk cosplaying best friend), then you should definitely check out the first draft here.

We need your votes by Wednesday July 15 at Noon EST.

If you’d like to see any of the images up close, just click on it. And don’t forget, these are just cover directions, not the final versions. (For more information about the difference between a cover direction and the final cover, click here.) Once we know which one you like best, the designer will come back and tweak things until everything is perfect, so please feel free to leave any thoughts or suggestions in the comments below!

This concept plays upon the various ephemera many fans collect over time. Most of the fandom world lives online, and I thought this was a fun way to show some physical evidence of fan love. This particular cover is mostly buttons, since they can be easily altered to fit the story.

This was Holly’s idea, and I ran with it. We were imagining Liv, absolutely heartbroken and sobbing over her laptop, right at the moment when she resolves to bring Spartan back. Holly has tons of cool figurines and dragon con swag at the office, and Danika has already created some amazing Spartan fan art, so we staged Liv’s desk and had a little photo shoot. If this goes to final we’ll re-shoot this professionally, with more cool things on the wall, and really make it feel like Liv’s room.

This was the very first idea I came up with, and it’s pretty much unchanged from my initial sketch. Any real fan would of course have a Spartan action figure, but perhaps only an obsessive one would create a memorial for it. I thought this scene perfectly captured the driving force of the story, as well as the humor and fun. The simple, one-color illustration keeps the mood light without looking too young. For the final I’d have to give Spartan a dye job, since he’s a natural blond!

Basically the idea was to play off the humor of the opening scene. When we first meet Liv, she’s in absolute shock and refusing to leave the empty movie theatre after watching her favorite character die. We thought this was a fun indicator of just how much of a diehard fangirl Liv is.

This is my take on the original cover for All the Feels. I loved the doodles and the concept, so I took those elements and played around. This girl (who Lauren found! Thanks, Lauren) definitely has all the feels, the periwinkle is bright without being girly, and I just really like the title/author font. Sometimes it really is as simple as that.
