Rich’s Fabric and Thread Cover Direction for VELVET
Our cover designers have created some amazing cover directions for Velvet by Temple West, and we’re counting on you to choose which one actually goes on the book! We know it’s a big decision so today we’ve asked our Art Director Rich D. to share the story behind this gorgeous cover approach:
When working on new Swoon Reads titles, we always like to try to get a variety of different types of covers, and with this approach, I found it a lot of fun to experiment with something that didn’t have a photographic picture of a girl on the front, but instead had an interesting typeface and focused on elements drawn from the story. The fabric texture is obviously drawn from the title itself, and it’s use, along with the thread and the idea of sewing is a call out to Caitlin’s unique character and interest in fashion and design. Then I chose a red background for the cover to represent the ideas of vampires and blood. The curves of the thread help balance the cover and add a sort of sensual, sexy feel, while the needle is there to remind us that there’s a bit of edge here.
If you love what Rich is doing here, let us know by leaving a comment and voting for this cover direction. And remember, this is a cover direction, not the final cover, so if you have suggestions for making it even more Swoonworthy, share it in the comments!
