Feminist Fight Songs: Celebrating National Poetry Month

In celebration of National Poetry month, I decided to highlight some of my favorite song lyrics by women, for women.

So without further ado, I’ll let the lyrics speak for themselves. In no particular order. . .

1) Flawless by Beyonce

Let’s be real, there was no way I was not going to include Flawless by Beyonce on this list (although Who Run the World was a top contender).

2) Confident by Demi Lovato

So you say I’m complicated

that I must be outta my mind

but you’ve had me underrated

What’s wrong with being

What’s wrong with being confident?

I just channel a little Demi Lovato as soon as I start having any silly thoughts like “maybe I’m coming off as too aggressive right now.”

3) Fight Song Rachel Platten

This is my fight song

take back my life song

prove I’m alright song

my power’s turned on

starting right now

I’ll be strong

I’ll play my fight song

and I don’t really care if nobody else believes

cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me.

For getting over a breakup or just warming up before your work-out sesh. I love me a good, all-purpose, pump-up song.

4) Got It by Marian Hill

I got this thing

gonna tie your tongue

step in my ring

you’ll be out round one.

Because the voice and the attitude is as sexy as the word play this song’s got going on here.

5) Q.U.E.E.N. by Janelle Monae

March to the streets ‘cuz I’m willing and I’m able

Categorize me, I defy every label

And while you’re selling dope, we’re gonna keep selling hope

We rising up now, you gotta deal you gotta cope

There’s no one like Janelle Monae to get you feeling a little revolutionary…

6) The Schuyler Sisters by Lin-Manuel Miranda

So men say that I’m intense or I’m insane

You want a revolution? I want a revelation?

So listen to my declaration.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident

that all men are created equal”

And when I meet Thomas Jefferson

I’m ‘a compel him to include women in the sequel

UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson spotlighted these lyrics in her interview with Lin-Manuel Miranda, and then later compelled him rap for He for She, as she beatboxed alongside. It might have been a break-the-internet moment.

7) She Keeps Me Warm by Mary Lambert

She says that people stare ‘cuz we look so good together

*sobbing* My heart breaks every time on that line.

8) Girl in a Country Song by Maddie and Tae

I hear you over there on your tailgate whistlin'

Sayin', "Hey girl."

But you know I ain't listenin'

'Cause I got a name

And to you it ain't "pretty little thing", "honey" or "baby"

I’m just going to download those last two lines onto my phone and have it ready to go for every cat caller out there.

9) Take A Number by Baiyu

And I’m so dangerous no man I’ve met ever compares

That’s why I’m through with this, ‘cause what you pushin’ ain’t the shit

She’s basically saying “take a number ‘cuz you ain’t getting mine.” Ok, maybe that’s just my interpretation of the song, but again I just love the attitude in this song.

10) Bo$$ by Fifth Harmony

You say that you a baller

And I see you tryna holla

But that ain't how I was brought up

Next

Working for my money

'Cause that's what my momma taught me

So yo ass betta show me some respect

…and then maybe my favorite line in the whole song:

I pledge allegiance to my independent girls in here.

What about you Swooners? I’m sure there are infinite gems I’ve missed out there and I can’t wait to hear your favorite empowering lyrics for every occasion. What do you like to wake up to? Work out to? Stress-cry or rock out to?
