Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for THE BRIGHTSIDERS
Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!
Good morning, Swooners! We've got something super-special-awesome to hopefully brighten up any Monday morning blah-ness: it's time to vote on the cover for Jen Wilde's second novel, The Brightsiders! We're stoked to share the four cover options with you, but before you dive in here's a refresher on what this book's all about:
"As a rock star drummer in the hit band The Brightsiders, Emmy King’s life should be perfect. But there’s nothing the paparazzi love more than watching a celebrity crash and burn. When a night of partying lands Emmy in hospital and her girlfriend in jail, she’s branded the latest tabloid train wreck.
Luckily, Emmy has her friends and bandmates, including the super-swoonworthy Alfie, to help her pick up the pieces of her life. She knows hooking up with a band member is exactly the kind of trouble she should be avoiding, and yet Emmy and Alfie Just. Keep. Kissing.
Will the inevitable fallout turn her into a clickbait scandal (again)? Or will she find the strength to stand on her own?"
Swoon designer Becca S. has concocted up four shiny cover directions for you to choose from and shared some thoughts about her inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will probably be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. Bass Drum Cover
I think every great band has a great logo on their kickdrum. Here I tried incorporating the bisexual flag into the design. I like this option because it's edgy but also cute!
Glitter Letters Cover
For this one, I thought I'd try a more typographic approach. I love the bold jewel tones on black. Nothing says "Rockstar" like glitter, so I thought we could literally say it in glitter! Lots and lots of glitter!
I wanted to try a photographic option that screamed "Rockstar"! What's more punk-rock than loud, colorful hair? I tried to make the colors of the bisexual flag really pop in this one. (And, of course include purple lipstick to complete the look!)
Shadow Drummer Cover
For this one I wanted to try something a little more cinematic and dreamy. I think it feels kind of like a music video seeing a drummer emerging from a purple mist. They mysteriousness adds a little extra drama too (which there's plenty of in the book!).
