Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for HOW TO BREATHE UNDERWATER

Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!

What's up, Swooners?

We'll tell you what's up: We're thrilled to share with you the four cover options for Vicky Skinner's recently renamed How to Breathe Underwater! In case you missed it, here's the lowdown on this book:

"Kate’s father has been pressuring her to be perfect for her whole life, pushing her to be the best swimmer she can be. But when Kate finds her dad cheating on her mom, Kate’s perfect world comes crashing down, and Kate is forced to leave home and the swim team she's been a part of her whole life.

Now in a new home, new school, and faced with the prospect of starting over, Kate isn't so sure that swimming is what she wants anymore. But when she decides to quit, her whole world seems to fall apart. But when Kate gets to know Michael, the cute boy that lives across the hall, she starts to think that starting over might not be so bad. There's only one problem: Michael has a girlfriend.

As the pressures of love, family, and success press down on her, can Kate keep her head above water?"

Swoon designers Danielle M., Rich D., and Becca S. have dreamed up four fun, flirty cover directions for you to choose from and shared some thoughts about their inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will probably be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. (Want to see how a cover goes from concept to final? Click here.)

Dive cover

Dive Cover

A lot of the book is focused on the two main characters deciding whether or not to stay in their comfort zones or dive into life headfirst. This cover focuses on that decision while reflecting the title.

HTBU Top Down cover

Top Down Cover

Since so much of Kate's life is spent under the water, we decided to really show what her view is like with this cover.

HTBU Pool Date cover

Pool Date Cover

One of the things that bring the two main character's together is their pool dates, where Kate is teaching Michael how to swim. This cover reflects the tension of the moment right before you jump into a pool for the first time.

We love the moments that Kate and Michael spend just being with each other. Their relationship is really the heart of the book, which is what we wanted to get across in this cover.

I love the Hangout Over. It's so carefree.

I would love the dive cover so much more if it had the typography of the top down cover! I think that if for the final winning cover (which I'm presuming is the dive cover) that it would be awesome and very eye catching if it was finalized with that wonderful typography!

The Dive cover - the bubbles coming off the diver really play into the breathing underwater idea.

I love the color schemes, but I don't love the font. I would reconsider the font across the board.

The Dive Cover is my favorite. There's a cool effect on the water, and I also like the symbolic meaning of the diving in the cover.

Dive Cover is my fave! Though I like the couple with the feet in the water too, but by the description I think making the cover with just her (no boy) fits more because she's dealing with a lot of personal issues.

Pool Date cover. I like the unusual font with repeated W and the couple standing beside the pool adds interest.

I really like the Dive Cover , my second would be the Top Cover but I'm not keen on the typography as it makes the title hard to read.

I think out of all of these the only one I don't really like is the Hangout cover. I think the "dive" cover is my favorite, i'm not sure about the title font, but there's just something about it that makes me want to hold my breath (!!!). The top-down cover is nice as-is, it's just got a different vibe to it, and while i like cover image for "pool date," i'd have to give the font/overlay a no.
