Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for MEG AND LINUS

Howdy, Swooners!

We are so very excited to present the five awesome cover directions for Meg and Linus! Hanna Nowinski's sweet LGBT contemporary novel has it all: friendship, heartbreak, crushes, Star Trek references, drama club drama, and much, much more. Here's the synopsis in case you're in need of a refresher:

"Meg and Linus are best friends bound by a shared love of school, a coffee obsession, and being queer. It’s not always easy to be the nerdy lesbian or gay kid in a suburban town. But they have each other. And a few Star Trek boxed sets. They're pretty happy.

But then Sophia, Meg’s longtime girlfriend, breaks up with Meg. Linus starts tutoring the totally dreamy new kid, Danny—and Meg thinks setting them up is the perfect project to distract herself from her own heartbreak. But Linus isn’t so sure Danny even likes guys, and maybe Sophia isn't quite as out of the picture as Meg thought she was. . . ."

Swoon designer extraordinaire Liz D. has put together five incredible cover options for you to choose from, and has shared some thoughts about her inspiration behind each one.

m&l embroidered cover

Embroidered Cover

I lovelovelove the idea of this cover. We would hire the super-talented Maricor/Maricar to create a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind embroidered cover. You can get the idea from my comp here, but seriously, take a look at their work and think how cool it would be to have them make a custom piece for Meg & Linus.

m&l rainbow cover

Rainbow Cover

You may have noticed quite a few of these covers use a rainbow color palette. That's because I wanted to cue readers that Meg & Linus has lots of queer characters because hooray for representation! This one has the most overt rainbow as it's a wash over the whole cover. The photo is quiet and contemplative; I love having the clouds show through the silhouettes.

m&l bright cover

Bright Cover

Oh, I also love this cover. It's very simple, and I think that's effective. The colors in the letters glow—I was imagining them like pieces of stained glass that could slide in front of and behind each other. Meg, of course, is drinking a cup of coffee as she perches on her own name. And Linus is holding hands with Danny as they stand over the "us" in Linus.

m&l starry black cover

Starry Black Cover

This is sort of the inverse of the Bright cover. When I designed this, I imaged peeling the black away to reveal a luminous scene. I called this the starry cover, but it could have snowflakes on it, too... in fact, if this cover wins, I may just have to put Linus and Danny's snow alien on it!

m&l drawn cover

Drawn Cover

This was a fun cover to work on! I wanted to do something that one of the characters could have made, just doodling in a notebook and playing with watercolors. If this one is chosen, I'd hire an artist to render Meg and Linus to fit their descriptions better—for one thing, Linus definitely needs a sweater vest!
