Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for MY NEW CRUSH GAVE TO ME!

Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!

Hello, Swooners!

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we're looking ahead to the holiday season. We're decking ourselves in red and green, getting those menorahs all dusted off, and looking forward to celebrating the holidays our favorite way - with a new book!

We're thrilled to share with you the four cover options for Shani Petroff's My New Crush Gave to Me. In case you missed it, here's the lowdown on this book:

"Charlotte “Charlie” Donovan knows what she wants for Christmas: Teo Ortiz. He’s a star athlete, in the National Honor Society, invited to every party, and contributes to the school paper (where Charlie is co-editor). Basically, he's exactly the type of guy Charlie’s looking for. The only problem—he barely knows she exists.

But Charlie has a plan: Rig the paper’s Secret Santa and win his heart with five perfect gifts. Enter J.D. Ortiz–Teo’s cousin, and possibly the most annoying person on the planet. He’s easy going, laid back, unorganized, and spontaneous—the exact opposite of Charlie (and Teo). But he knows what Teo wants, so she’s stuck with him.

Yet the more time Charlie spends with J.D. the more she starts to wonder: Does she really know what, or rather who, she wants for Christmas?"

Swoon designer Liz D. Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016 has dreamed up four gorgeous cover directions for you to choose from and shared some thoughts about their inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will probably be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. (Want to see how a cover goes from concept to final? Click here.)

Holiday Sweater Cover

Liz D.'s Holiday Sweater Cover

There's an ugly sweater party in My New Crush Gave to Me, and I love holiday sweaters, so of course this had to be one of the cover options! And the best part is, if this cover wins, Holly will actually hand knit it for the final book. How cool is that?

Frosted Window

Liz D.'s Frosted Window Cover

Reading books is a little voyeuristic, isn't it? Peering in at other people's lives... With this cover, we're peering through a frosted window, trying to catch a glimpse at Charlie's romantic adventures under the mistletoe.

Lights cover

Liz D's Lights Cover

There are so many great moments in My New Crush Gave to Me, and one of my favorites is when Charlie and JD get all tangled in Christmas lights together. So romantic. The photo you're looking at right now is a placeholder to show you the idea. If it wins, we'll do a shoot to make sure the characters and lights and everything look juuuuust right.

Ribbon cover

Liz D's Ribbon Cover

Holly had the great idea to treat the cover as if the book itself is a present which led to me to the great (if I say do so myself) idea to make the title look as if it's written in ribbon. My rendering isn't perfect (and it's a little hard to read, I know), so if it wins we'll hire an amazing letterer like Luke Lucas to create a gorgeous custom piece for us.

They are all nice, but the sweater one is my favorite!

Here is my more detailed take:

Sweater - fun, festive, makes me happy when I see it. The one thing I would try to fix is that the sweater writing is a little messy, while not hard to read - could be a little easier. But it still makes me want to pick it up.

Frosted Window- pretty, but I thought it was older than YA. It doesn't give me a feel of the book, but it is an attractive cover (although not my favorite font).

Lights - I really like having Christmas lights there. They definitely caught my eye. However, I didn't even notice there was a couple until I read the blurb that talked about the characters there. I had to study it to finally see the couple in the upper corner. The cover is also pretty dark. And the font almost seems a little sinister instead of festive.

Ribbon- I think the ribbons are beautiful, but they are also very hard to read. I know it says that will be fixed if this is picked, but I worry that may take away from the beauty of the font. Taming the swirls may also take away a lot of what I like about this one.

Hands down the sweater cover is the best! Festive, young, bright, and very clear. The lights cover is my least favorite... shouldn't be in the running!

I like the Frosted Window cover and the Lights cover, the Lights one is nice because the title is the easiest to read out of all four

I like the Lights cover - not only does it reflect a specific scene in the story, but also the whole "tangled" situation in general.

I like the sweater cover and the lights cover best.
I just wish the lights cover had more of a green theme, then used the red ribbon font.
