Judging a Cover by Its Book: Choose the Cover Direction for QUEENS OF GEEK
Cover voting is now closed. Thanks for all your help!
Hey there, Swooners!
We are so very excited to present the four awesome cover directions for Queens of Geek! In this geeky YA romance from Jen Wilde, three BFFs go to SupaCon in search of fandom, and end up finding love. Here's the synopsis in case you're in need of a refresher:
"Charlie likes to stand out. She’s a vlogger and actress promoting her first movie at SupaCon, and this is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star Reese Ryan. When internet-famous cool-girl actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought.
Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with her best guy friend Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about a fan contest for her favorite fandom, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe."
Swoon designer extraordinaire Liz D. has put together four incredible cover options for you to choose from, and has shared some thoughts about her inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will probably be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. Pink Hair Cover
I love pink hair. (Though I usually have blue, personally.) So I haaad to put Charlie's pink hair on one of the covers. I love how this direction is photographic while also being fairly abstract and type-driven. The way it looks (it looks super cool, right?) conveys the tone of the story, and then the tagline and title tell you the rest.
Four Faces Cover
Four characters, four faces. Easy! The neon colors pop against the black background, and the type treatment on the title is a fun nod to Charlie and Alyssa's arcade date. For final, the faces would be tweaked to match the characters instead of being identical. It would be really cool if the black negative space formed a shape, too, like the classic vase/profile optical illusion — I just have to figure out what shape the faces should create!
The Kiss Cover
Everyone I've shown this cover to is immediately drawn to it for the beautiful colors and bold, simple type. Then after a moment they see the kiss and Ooohhh. Love. I hope you feel the same!
This is kind of my take on the original site cover. I like the idea of representing the four characters with their shoes, so I took that concept and went in an illustrated direction instead of using photography. For final, I'd hire an illustrator to put more personality in the art, and I'd work with Jen to make sure the colors and styles really match the characters.
