What's up, Swooners?
We are so pumped for you to finally see the four amazing cover options for the recently-renamed-with-your-help When Life Gives You Demons! An exorcist-in-training attempts to juggle high school, love, and the family business in this smart and devilishly funny paranormal from Jennifer Honeybourn. In case you need a reminder, here's the synopsis:
"Sixteen-year-old Shelby Black has spent the past year training to be an exorcist. Her great-uncle Roy—a Catholic priest and Shelby’s guardian—believes she has a gift for expelling demons, and he’s put her through exorcist boot camp hell, but he still doesn’t trust her to do an exorcism on her own.
High school is hard enough without having to explain that you fight demons for a living, so Shelby keeps her extracurricular activity quiet, especially from Spencer, her cute math tutor. Secrets run in Shelby’s family, though: her mother has been missing ever since an exorcism went horribly wrong, and Uncle Roy is tight-lipped about it. But Shelby’s hell-bent on finding her mom, no matter what—even if what it ends up costing her her soul AND a date with Spencer."
Swoon designer Liz D. has put together four fantastic cover directions for you to choose from, and has shared some thoughts about her inspiration behind each one. Remember, the below images aren't necessarily final. These are just directions, so there will most likely be some tweaks made before the book hits the shelves. I love neon so when I saw that El Diablo has a neon devil in its window, I had to put him on the cover. And, then I had to put the title in neon. It's such a great title! It deserves to be up in lights!
For final: The title and the devil aren't done in the same style right now. I, or an artist, would re-do the whole thing to make it look like a whole, real neon piece.
Lauren: I really want to see a cover with a lemon tree on it.
Me: That doesn't really make sense... and feels heavy-handed at the same time.
Kat: You could put a stake through the lemon!
Me: Done and done.
For final: This is a random lo-res photo that I doodled on. The final cover would have a hi-res photo that I would doodle on better.
I picture Shelby totally exasperated because she's in demons up to her ears! She's tearing her hair out! I used a fun chalk-style drawing behind her to add color and remind you where demons come from.
For final: I'm not 100% sure this girl is quite right. Even if she is I did a terrible job silhouetting her hair and it looks totally fake. That would all be fixed, and I'd revisit the flame + title to integrate them better.
All Type Cover
I was playing with different font options for the title and fell in love with this one. Plus, I adore the title of this book so I want to put it front and center. The background is Shelby's case reports all overlapping and in different sizes to create an abstract texture that still ties in with the story. (I originally had 666s but Kat said no.)
For final: I'd like the case reports to be more designed and more thoughtfully placed. The final production would be cool because we could a three color jacket to get really bright pink and yellow and play with texture through embossing and spot gloss.
