Where did the idea for How to Drown come from?
When I graduated from high school, I had a lot of pressure on me to go for scholarships in a field I didn’t want to be in anymore, music performance, and when I decided not to pursue that, my life turned chaotic. In the span of one year, all of my plans for college derailed, my two closest friends moved away, I was in two family weddings (my dad's and my sister’s), and I met the love of my life. Eventually, I sat down and put it all on paper, and it turned into Kate’s story.
Kate is a swimmer. What were your hobbies in high school?
In high school, I was in Orchestra, and that sucked up most of my time. I played the violin. I also spent a lot of time reading, writing, being a goody two-shoes with my best friend, and having exactly zero boyfriends, which gave me more time to get ahead on my homework.
Who would play your characters in a movie?
I was doing the most recent revision of this book when Shadowhunters was airing, so I couldn’t help but imagine Matt Daddario as Michael. And since the beginning, I’ve always seen Melissa Benoist as Kate.
What makes you swoon?
Good music, especially if performed by a cute boy (bonus points if the boy has a sexy accent), and spontaneous dates to places with good food.
