Meet the Author of RECONNECTED, Catherine Tinker!
Meet the second of three fantastic authors joining the Swoon Reads family, Catherine Tinker! We absolutely adored her sweet contemporary novel about a girl who has to hide her identity—and her feelings—from her ex-online-best-friend when she unexpectedly meets him in real life. Where did the idea for Reconnected come from?
I graduated from college in the spring of 2016 and began to feel very introspective as a result. I was wondering what happened to friends I’ve lost touch with over the years, whether I knew them from the cafeteria table in middle school or a now-defunct online Disney game we first met through. A few months later, the Rio Olympics began. Every single Olympic games, I swear to myself I won’t get invested. Three days later, I’ll be staying up all hours of the night livestreaming every single event I can find. In the midst of that combination of Olympic fever and post-grad rut, I also had a very real but fleeting crush on the entire U.S. men’s gymnastics team and wanted to see more male gymnasts as love interests.
Reconnected features a male gymnast as the romantic lead. What's your favorite Olympic sport to watch, and why?
It feels wrong to answer anything other than gymnastics! One of my earliest memories is of watching a gymnastics event when my family went to the 1996 games. We were seated pretty high up, and most of what I remember from that day is dropping a pair of binoculars on the poor person sitting in front of us. I hope their day got better from there. But gymnastics is such an incredible combination of athleticism (something I sorely lack) and artistry (something I can relate to). How can you not be amazed by watching people essentially defy gravity?
Who would play your characters in a movie?
Kara Hayward from Moonrise Kingdom looks about how I pictured Anne, and Shane Wiskus of the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team could pull off Freddie.
What makes you swoon?
Begrudgingly, Harry Styles. I’m a regular Saturday Night Live watcher, so occasional appearances on the show were as far as One Direction ever made it in my orbit. But apparently I’m very weak to committed late-night comedy performances and music reminiscent of Augustana (a band whose music I was deeply smitten with as a teenager). I’m not sure how else to explain it. But if he ever did want to go on a date, I could tell him about the time I met Nicholas Sparks.
