Meet the Author of THE WAY TO GAME THE WALK OF SHAME, Jenn P. Nguyen!
Meet the third of our five brilliant new authors joining the Swoon Reads family, Jenn P. Nguyen! We fell in love with her novel The Way to Game the Walk of Shame (previously titled The Love Contract on the site) from Page 1. The image of Taylor army crawling around Evan’s floor desperately trying to find her shoes and get out always gets us chuckling. With its fresh take on a classic romantic trope (bad boy/perfectionist girl), we know you’ll love it as much as we did!
What’s your favorite pizza topping?
Gosh, do I have to choose? I love everything. Seriously, I’m the type of person who would pile so many toppings on a pizza that you wouldn’t be able to even pick up a slice. But I do like veggies on my pizza the most. It makes me feel less guilty about eating pizza in the first place.
Do you have any pets?
I do! I have a little mutt (half Chihuahua & half Jack Russell) named Noodle. He’s almost four years old and a little spoiled brat, but he’s still very sweet. Taylor’s dog, Oreo, was actually inspired by Noodle. When we first got the puppy, my husband suggested to name him Oreo because of his black and white face, but I had my heart on naming him Noodle. I think because we made his bed out of an empty noodle box. He’s long outgrown that box now so it doesn’t make sense anymore, but the name stuck!
Where did you come up with the idea for a love contract?
I wish that I could say it came to me in a dream or that I was driving down a road and the beautiful leaves inspired me or something cool like that, but unfortunately no. A couple of years ago, I was watching a Korean drama (can’t remember which one) and it had one of those love at first sight/instant chemistry relationships, but they couldn’t be together for some reason. While those stories are great, I couldn’t help thinking about how much fun it would have been if they didn’t like each other at first and were forced to act like a loving couple in front of everyone. Then I started brainstorming about why they would have to be together and the love contract (along with Taylor and Evan) was formed.
Who would play your characters in a movie?
I LOVE to cast my characters. I’m a crazy plotter and one of my favorite projects is looking for character photos. That’s the first thing I do after I think of a new story. It helps me outline the plot better when I can visualize the actual scenes in my head like a movie or a tv show. It’s also a good excuse to spend hours looking up pictures of hot guys!
Taylor — Danielle Panabaker
Evan — Nick Zano (during the What I Like About You era)
Brian — Wu Chun
Carly — Lucy Hale
Lauren — Scarlett Pomers
Aaron — Zachary Abel
What makes you swoon?
Darren Criss. I swear to people that Darren Criss is my soulmate. Lover of Harry Potter, singer, and musician? Swoon! Luckily, my husband is cool with that. Sort of. I also love red velvet cheesecake. Specifically the one from The Cheesecake Factory. First loves. Kissing done well. And sweet romcom endings like While You Were Sleeping and He’s Just Not That Into You (You’re my exception).
