That's My Jam: Theme Songs for YA Books

If you could pick one song that embodied your favorite YA novel, what would it be? Or what about the other way around—is there a YA novel out there that tells the story you know a song is trying to tell??

Here are some of my personal picks and match-ups!

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo — “Raise Hell” by Dorothy

Young blood, stand and deliver,

no need for a queen affair

Young blood, gotta pull the trigger,

When the whole world running scared.

I think “gotta raise a little hell” is pretty much suitable for any situation Kaz finds himself in, right?!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater — "The Mystery of Life" by Nickodemus

It’s really difficult

sometimes impossible

to understand the mystery of life

The lyrics don’t feel like an instant match up for this book or the Raven Cycle series, but there’s something about the music that’s so moody and magical that it just felt right for these books. There’s certainly a thrilling mystique behind the events that bring Blue into contact with the Raven boys, behind how Gansey, Adam, Ronan, and Noah all met and fell in together in the first place.

The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia — "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato

Puttin’ my defenses up

‘Cause I don’t wanna fall in love

If I ever did that

I think I’d have a heart attack

I picked this song for The Lovely Reckless for how closed off Frankie is at the beginning of the story—she’s been through too much. So meeting Marco, falling in love again—it’s the biggest risk she could take.

Demi Lovato totally represents that for me in this song—intensity, risk, but also the hope for new love.

The Cruelty by Scott Bergstrom — "7 nation army" by The White Stripes

I’m gonna fight ‘em off

A seven-nation army couldn’t hold me back.

I would describe this song, like I would describe the main character of this book—deadly. Ruthless. Unstoppable.

Wesley James Ruined My Life by Jennifer Honeybourn – “One Way or Another” by Blondie

One way or another I'm gonna find ya

I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha

One way or another I'm gonna win ya

I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha

This song is fun AND funny, like the book, and I’ve always thought that those first few lyrics of the sound were about revenge…until it turns into something so much more!
