Songs We Wish Were YA Books

Books aren’t the only place to find great love stories: They’re all over the airwaves, too! Here are some of our Swoon Staffers’ picks for songs they would love to see turned into a YA novel.

Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey. I would love for the YA book to be inspired by the moody, beautiful music video, which tells a tragic love story about two women. But instead of Lana’s character’s girlfriend committing suicide like she does in the video, I’d like the book to be about how their love is redemptive, so  the girl finds reasons to keep living. It’s such a beautiful song, with perfect lyrics about love: “Oh, my God, I feel it in the air / Telephone wires above all sizzlin’ like your stare / Honey I’m on fire I feel it everywhere / Nothing scares me anymore.” Even though it’s called Summertime Sadness, I just want a happily ever after for these girls.

— Christine Barcellona

I feel like just about any Taylor Swift song would make a fabulous YA book. Some of my current favorites include You Belong with Me. (Added bonus if you gender-bend it so that it’s a boy in love with his best friend), Love Story (the video gives it such a great historical feel), and Style  (I’m pretty obsessed with this chorus “You got that James Dean day dream look in your eye/And I got that red lip classic thing that you like/And when we go crashing down, we come back every time.”).

— Holly West

Picture by Carly Rae Jepsen, which (I’m pretty sure!) is about a Long Distance Relationship, and I like to pretend it’s specifically about an Internet Long Distance Relationship, like maybe they met on tumblr or something. How 2015!

— Summer O.

Songs I wish were YA books? Literally any song that Taylor Swift has ever written. Seriously. But if I had to pick one in particular I would probably say Ours. “Any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored, cause my heart is yours.” Come on. Tell me you don’t want to read that book!

— Jo K.

I think Storm Warning by Hunter Hayes would be a great YA book. This girl just storms in out of nowhere and completely turns this boy’s world upside down in the best way possible! She sounds like this wild free spirit that I would love to read about. (Although, the more I think about it, the more I think my wish may have already come true!)

— Emily S.

This is probably pretty obvious, but Taylor Swift Fifteen is basically an YA book in and of itself: Freshman girl falls for popular senior and gives her heart away; but has her best friend to help her dry her tears and pick up the pieces when he breaks her heart.

— Jennifer G.

Basically every Taylor Swift song, but first choice would be You Belong With Me.

— Erin C.

I would LOVE more music inspired books! My wish list is:

Mirrors by Justin Timberlake: I just love seeing your other half in someone, plus I just picture Justin Timberlake.

Begin Again by Taylor Swift: a coffee shop, a cute boy with a camera, and talking about Christmas. Sighhh.

Wild Boy by Danielle Bradbery: I’ve been dying for a southern romance and this song just screams for fun parties with the town’s bad boy. You must read the lyrics for this entire song which includes lines like “Looks you in the eye when he says your name, Midnight ride on a motorcycle in the pouring rain”. Swoon!

— Lauren S.

How about you, Swooners? What songs would you love to see turned into a YA novel?
