Staff Stories: Make-ups, Break-ups, and Everything in Between — Funny Teenage & College Relationship Stories
It’s not ALL work around the Swoon Reads headquarters. We’ve discovered that it’s also very important to have long gossipy conversations around the metaphorical water cooler. Thus, we’ve compiled a list of burning questions for our Swoon Staff members to answer. And, we’d love for you to join us! Share your answers in the comments. This week’s question is:
Do you have a funny story about a teenage or college relationship?
“When I studied abroad there was a guy who used to come over to the international dorms and hit on all the new girls every semester. I may have lead him on *slightly* and then dropped him before anything happened to teach him a lesson. He worked at a gas station and I still avoid that brand of gas if I can.” — Claire T.
“My high school boyfriend was the president of the boys’ a cappella group and I was the president of the girls’ a cappella group. Our relationship was basically a season of Glee.” — Liz J.
“During my sophomore year of college, my dorm’s housekeeper basically played matchmaker between my friend and a guy from a neighboring college. She happened to sit between my friend and the guy at some event or other and kept elbowing her to say “isn’t he handsome!” and wound up strong-arming the guy into asking for my friend’s number. #awkward” — Ellen C.
“My first boyfriend and I made out at a Dave Matthews Band concert and then he asked me out…..Ugh. Dave Matthews make-out boyfriend was (is?) an aspiring rapper. When we broke up after high school graduation he wrote a hate rap about me. Think Eamon, but wayyyy less catchy.” — Johanna K.
“I worked in my college dining commons frying eggs in the very early morning on a big grill. I had to wear a uniform and a hair net plus a bandanna. Every day this really cute, kind of shy surfer came in and ordered 6 eggs. He stood there while I made them, and I was so self-conscious. Then one day he said, “It’s obvious no one is going to introduce us, and we don’t have any friends in common. So I’m going to be brave and ask you out.” I loved that. He was a sweetie!” — Liz S.
“I just wrote you a story in which I referred to Legolas as my first boyfriend, do you really think I was in any relationships as a teenager?” — Summer O.
“I remember a guy I went out with when I was 15 or 16 gave me sexy underwear for Valentine’s Day and I was so embarrassed I didn’t know what to say. It seemed like something old people would do, like the people on Love American Style. That reference will make it clear that I’m the old one now.” — Kate F.
“So to pick up with the story of the boy in my English class, we dated until high school graduation and then I went off to art school in NYC and he moved to Colorado to study forestry. He wrote me a letter EVERY SINGLE DAY. I now have hundreds of love letters as artifacts of who we were and how we felt when we were young lovers. What could be better.” — Anne D.
