Swoon Author Vicky Skinner: HOW TO DROWN Has a Shiny New Title!

So, I know everyone says this, but believe me when I say, I am awful at titles. Seriously. Most of the time, the novels that I’m working on are titled Untitled or simply the names of the main character and their love interest. I have a serious lack of title creativity.

But when it came to How to Drown, I thought I had it in the bag. When I wrote the first draft of the book back in 2010, it was called Beneath the Surface, and of course it looked WAY different than what it looks like now. So when I did a complete re-write of the book a few years ago, I gave it a new title, and it was the first title I’d ever come up with that I really loved.

However, I was the only one who loved it.

So it was back to the drawing board! I was asked to make a list of a few more titles that I thought might work for the book, and I spent DAYS agonizing over the list. My husband watched while I paced and brainstormed and made lists and lists of absolutely terrible titles. I felt like I’d put all my creativity into that one and that nothing else was going to come.

I finally sent off a list that I felt was good enough to be seen by other humans and quickly got an email back that the Swoon team loved one of the titles.

And that title was…

How to Breathe Underwater!!!!

The consensus was that How to Breathe Underwater was a much more hopeful title and better suited the optimistic message of the book, and to be honest, it rolls off the tongue way better than the old title! I’m so happy I got to be part of the new naming process, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the new book!

Come back tomorrow for cover voting!

When I first saw the title "How To Drown" in your post I thought, "I like that." I was all for that title sticking around. Then, I read the rest of your post and found the new title and I like that even more! I haven't read the book, but I agree that the new title is more optimistic. I can't wait to see what the cover looks like.

Congratulations and good luck!
Michelle

"The Stock" <--- not the first title I've had and probably won't be the last!
