It feels a little weird to make this confession on a publishing blog but here goes: I love TV.
It’s downright embarrassing how quickly I can (and do) work my way through a season of TV on Netflix. I can’t won’t tell you how many times my roommate and I have planned our evening TV time via lunch break text messages. And I’m more than a little ashamed to admit how emotionally invested I’ve become in some of my favorite TV couples. But I can’t help it! There are some seriously swoonworthy duos in this fall’s lineup.
Here’s a brief roundup of the couples I’m crushing on this fall. May they inspire you to write your own swoonworthy romance manuscript…or at least inspire you to (re) watch some of these most excellent TV shows.
(Warning, the following contains some pretty major spoilers for the uninitiated.)
LESLIE & BEN from Parks and Rec
The Couple: Leslie is the relentlessly perky, waffle-loving deputy director of the parks department in the tiny fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Ben is a state budget auditor who initially comes to Pawnee to evaluate the town’s finances – but stays for love. And a full-time job as assistant city manager.
Why They’re Swoonworthy: Leslie and Ben’s love is a forbidden love. Can you say, “swoon!” Plus their every interaction is so adorable that it hurts. This ridiculously convoluted high five? I die. And their first kiss? Squeeeeeeee! Basically, Amy Pohler and Adam Scott have the best on-screen chemistry I’ve ever seen.
BARNEY & ROBIN from How I Met Your Mother
The Couple: Barney is a suit-wearing, laser tag enthusiast, willing to say anything and everything to hook up with a hot girl. Robin is a scotch-swilling news anchor – slash former Canadian pop-star – with a deep skepticism of marriage and relationships.
Why They’re Swoonworthy: What’s cuter than a couple of serial daters falling in love? We all saw this coming back in season one when Robin suited up to be Barney’s wingman. They both love scotch, cigars, and ragging on Ted. Plus, they both have some pretty sick dance moves. That kind of chemistry can’t be faked!
BOOTH & BONES from Bones
The Couple: Seeley Booth is a special agent with the FBI. He’s a jock, a patriot, and a big-time believer in love and marriage. Dr. Temperance Brennan is staunch rationalist who works as a forensic anthropologist at the fictional “Jeffersonian Museum” and consults on unusual cases for FBI.
Why They’re Swoonworthy: Booth and Bones adhere to the old adage of “opposites attract.” She’s all head and he’s all heart. But as they take on more cases, Booth and Bones form an unusually close partnership. What follows is season-upon-season of delightful will-they-won’t-they tension. And when they finally get together? Well, the wedding scene will make you cry.
Don’t get me wrong: Northing compares to curling up with a good book (or three or four), but snuggling up on the couch to watch a few episodes of a favorite TV show is pretty darn enjoyable, too.
