Description

This is a novel about the history of a rural village with main characters struggling in pain and in vain. It presents, roughly in chronological order, the ups and downs of the village during the eighty years from the initiation of the turbulent revolution of the early 20th century to the beginning of the new century, a period when China experienced the fastest change in the millennium. Instead of mirroring the facts in a straightforward manner, it goes in two parallel competitive directions with clues and tension building. One narrative line, also the main thread of the novel, follows the fate of the Lin family for the three generations. The other line is led by the experiences of the Ma family and other people.
